Traveling from Narita to Tokyo Station

I’ll be staying at the Hilton Narita Hotel for a weekend and would like to travel into Tokyo for the day. From what I can see, it looks like taking the NEX from Narita is the best option. I have a couple questions on this process:

1). If I’m starting off at the hotel (Hilton) in Narita and want to take the NEX, do I need to go back to the airport to jump on the train or is there another station that I would go to? If I do have to go back to the airport, is it difficult to find the NEX train?

2). It looks like the round trip ticket is about 3k. Is there anything that combines the cost of the NEX with a Tokyo day pass so that I can just pay one price to ride the NEX and the. Unlimited subway around Tokyo?

3). If I take the NEX, do I have to schedule my return trip from Tokyo (to Narita) or can I just show up and jump on the train?

Thanks for the help!

Terry

I believe there are but two stops on the NEX in the Narita area . One at Terminal 2 and the other at Terminal 1 at NRT. You can buy tickets at either stop.

You can get a JR day pass, I do not know if the NEX is covered. The NEX is covered under the Japan Rail Pass so perhaps it is by the day pass also.

You can buy a one way ticket and then purchase the return trip at Tokyo station when you wish to return, trains run frequently. I do not know if that is more expensive as I have never bought a round trip as I am either traveling on the pass or traveling to a different city.

Again, I have never asked about a non-assigned seat on the NEX as I only travel by green car and they are always assigned seating. However, once I got on the wrong train and it did not even have the car I was assigned to, they checked my ticket and said nothing. I imagine if someone came along and it was their seat, I would have simply moved after apologizing, appropriately.

Btw, NEX is JR -- the subway is Metro and the passes are not interchangeable to my knowledge. I generally only use JR either on the rail pass or I use a Suica card that you can purchase and preload. It's handy for most train station purchases also.

As to Tokyo station the NEX is in the deep bowels of the station and not exactly convenient. I prefer Shinagawa as it is much smaller.

1) Yes (NEX usually runs 2-3 trains per hour)
2) No (But you can JR daily pass for 750 YEN per day) - One way NEX is about 3000 YEN unless they have special promotions.
3) No (Unless you want to buy ahead and locked in your schedule)

1) Yes. You can find a train station easily on the basement level either in T1 or T2.
2) No combined package is available.
A discount NEX round-trip ticket costs Yen 4000. You have to show your passport to purchase this ticket.

A day pass is not sold in Narita. You have to buy one at a JR station in Tokyo - wherever station you arrive at. The one below costs Yen 1590, valid for JR lines and subways.

3) You are likely to be asked to reserve your return journey when you purchase the NEX round-trip ticket.

Bus to Tokyo/Ginza is way cheaper though.

FYI. There is a bus that will drop you off at the Hilton. It will take longer, but is cheaper and you don’t have to walk from the station with your luggage to the hotel.

This is a nice option I learned about from a friend. Good call.

I still taken the Narita Express for the most part though. I get the JR pass so the NEX is free if you activate your pass on arrival. Or sometimes I just pay the train fee and activate the pass the next day (if I'm arriving at night/late afternoon).

You don't need to get the return NEX ticket immediately. You cam get it later.
