Xmas is here 2018

Is it just me, or are Christmas cakes in Japan overpriced?

Depends on the ingredients and how much your paying for brand. In Tokyo I prefer buying Xmas and Birthday cakes from an "independent" patisserie. That is were the best price/quality match works for me. ArnaudLarher is my current "provider" :) Xmas cakes are running from 3000 - 5400 at AL. Avoid hotel cake shops.

I bought two small (5x9x1.5cm) slices of traditional English Xmas cake this morning for 500JPY each. Quality ingredients, and production on a boutique scale equals high prices. Still good value for a rare treat. I estimated that a full 12x12cm cake would have cost 32,000.

Depends on where you're getting it from and how it is. An average "Cheap" cake is going to be in the ¥2,000 range and they're....
Fine.
I mean go with a chocolate one if you're going cheap because at least the level of sugar will mask the lower quality, cheap shortcakes are just super bland.
Expensive cakes can run anywhere from ¥5,000~20,000 (And honestly, it's hit or miss on if they're even good or not, I got a 10,000 cake for my birthday last year from my roommate, you could tell it was quality because the whip was really good, real heavy cream, very fresh tasting, but the shortcake was just... egh.)
((Ok I guess I just don't really like strawberry shortcake to begin with, it's just too bland for me, when I make it I load on extra strawberries and add powdered sugar to the middle icing to just give it some added sweetness, but storebought shortcake no matter where they're from are like eating a can of whipping cream, it's just not good.))

But even outside of Christmas season this is your general range of what cakes cost.
I agree. Strawberry shortcakes are very bland, especially in Japan where they tend to go easy on the sugar and cream.. Chocolate cakes all the way!

Just shut the fuck up and enjoy Christmas in a Very Merry Little Christmas way as Frank Sinatra advises. And if you are Hebrew or Muslim or Ismaili or Zoroastrian or Athiest or Buddhist or Shinto or Seventh Fucking Day Adventist or Mormon or Pagan or Hindu or Jain or Tamil or Hari Krishna or any other silly ass religion, well, just suck it up. Grin and bear it. Whistle through your teeth and spit. Because these Santa suit wearing mother fuckers are going to aggravate you for the next few days. It will soon be over.

We need to get Japan interested in THanksgiving so they have TG decorations up for a month before christmas.
I do fail to see why any other country would celebrate something that rest on American history :p

Well for starters, how about because Japan loves everything about America, American culture and just about anything and everything that has anything to do with America to the point it being absolutely silly! In point of fact, the only two reasons Thanksgiving isn’t wildly popular in Japan is because they don’t have football and Barka Loungers are too big to fit in Japanese living rooms. Otherwise they’d be all over it. Oh yea, and also because their ovens are way to small for turkeys.
