Alright saddle up here comes a no non-sense review of Harley Quinn.
Things appear to pick up in the film right after Harley did her thing in Suicide Squad and more importantly breaking up with The Joker.
What many people who are not familiar with the DCU is that Harley...well she has had a very abusive and toxic relationship with the joker. With the Joker essentially using her like cannon fodder and really not giving a damn about Harley's intentions and love to him, pretty much one-sided. It has been a few years since they have broken up in the comics and fans have been demanding a relationship between her and Poison Ivy, which they got. Will you see Poison Ivy in the film? No. So there is that back story for you.
Harley is seen in pretty much a montage of what her life is going through since Joker threw her out on her ass. It all culminates with her very public and large destruction of private property cementing the fact that well she is single and fuck the joker. From there they do a Deadpool (Harley can also break the 4th wall, I would dare say this is an easter egg) multiple flashback montages of why the hell we got to this point.
The action is great, the montages though many are well thought out and fit the story, though it can be quite Family Guy esque at times. The character development of the Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya is quick, but to the point, you understand their motivations, why they might have some sort of conflict with Harley or each other.
The bad, well I can tell you from my friend circle, they hated mainly because of the whole women empowerment thing that the movie does not try to hide. Even though Harley says she dumped Joker in the film she is thrown out on her ass by his goons. Renee is gay and has a conflict with her ex and most of the men in her life, the huntress is...(that is a spoiler so I won't ruin it for you). Almost every fight scene is the birds of prey beating up on men, so on and so forth. The major con that they hated was the fact that Harley voted for Bernie Sanders. As for the film Ewan Mcgregor played a FANTASTIC Black Mask (Harley breaks the 4th wall writing his name instead of mercenary while drunk, it's a blink and you'll miss it deal), the thing about it is that he is playing a villain, who is sadistic in the way he kills people for the slightest of infractions, and because of this you a left wanting more, sadly little screen time. Some of the dialogue between the heroines in this film towards the end just felt kinda rushed and the ending battle was a tad bit ridiculous.
If you're a Harley Quinn fan like myself it is definitely a must-see! What is sad is that DCU does great on solo films and villain films but absolutely drops the ball on the Justice League, Batman, and Superman. Side note if you have not seen the new Harley Quinn animated show streaming on DCU, it is worth it for the service. The show is AMAZING, it is funny and what would happen if Batman the animated series grew up and became an adult.
