At the moment, I can afford a low mileage, pre-owned Mercedes Benz SLC. It's a nice, sleek, hardtop convertible. I love the car but it gives off a chick vibe because of it's small size. Here are some pics:

If I save up for another year and a half, I maybe able to afford a low mileage Benz S-Class Sedan (they depreciate like crazy).
The SLC has little to offer aside from looks in terms of features (gps, heated leather, etc.).
The S-Class has a bit more to offer (massage seats, nicer interior, etc.). To me the S-Class is cool for it's large size & mafia boss vibe but at times could seem like a boring, old man car. Some pics below:

I really hope I don't come across as a douche in this post. I'm also considering not even getting a car since it's not needed in Tokyo but with that being said here are my questions:

1) Which car as a man would you prefer to get?
2) Which car do you think would attract more female attention and best suit a single, bachelor?

I'd think women would prefer the SLC since it's a cool looking convertible but don't know if japanese girls would think it looks less manly for a guy as opposed to the large sedan.
If I had to make an inaccurate stereotype, I'd think chicks here would dig the convertible since it looks more exciting and the s-class, despite its large size/features would seem like a grandpa car to the typical materialistic japanese girl.

Thanks guys....again...hope I don't come across as a douche lol.

And female posters here, I'd love to hear your opinion!!

My answer for 1) I’d take the S-class.

My view of it (and feel free to disagree) is the SLC is a more chill, relaxed vibe. Like driving with the top down, rolled up shirt sleeves and sunglasses kind of image. The S-class seems more, well, classy. Tailored suit, shined shoes, power tie imagery.

Either type is a good image but pair it with what you’re trying to project. And hopefully you’re not doing a “mid-life crisis, buy a convertible” thing

Bro, I don't even know where to start with this. I've been driving BMW cars for the better part of 15 years so I know luxury cars turn heads (at least mine does) but unless you can turn a wrench or have a lot of extra money around I don't at all suggest buying a used German luxury car. They are expensive to operate, insure and maintain and you sound... young.

But if I had to choose, it would be the S Class. Because I'd rather look like a rich geezer than whatever kind of dude drives a convertible.

I think you are a nob for buying a car based on what you think the ladies are going to think. Maybe to some degree what you drive says something about your values and personality. But buying an obviously expensive and flashy ride in the hopes that it will help you get laid is lame. And it is very 1980s too. You should get a Kei car.

I pick the second one. Looks a little classier and probably has better crashworthiness.

Personally though, I think it's silly trying to attract girls with a flashy car. I also find it criminal to buy a Euro car in JAPAN!

lol i know this thread is super corny, it's just if I'm going to buy spend alot on a car I want take into consideration all factors, including the head turning factor.

@Luke, I took into account maintenance, insurance, etc but repairs is something i really dont have a tight grasp on. I figure if I take it for maintenance yearly I should prevent any serious trouble. Also, buying these cars pre-owned but certified is my goal with no more than around 20,000 miles. No way in hell can I afford 9,000,000 yen car and even if I could....I wouldn't spend that much

Attempting to purchase a Prius should be grounds for having your license revoked. For life.

Maintenance on modern cars is really just changing the fluids. For euro cars, If you're lucky, that will be all that's required. Anything further is an arm & leg.

top tip for you, as you are using the car to try and get laid;
I once had an interesting conversation with a designer of concept cars for Peugeot who was in Japan. They had done some market research and asked women what they look for in a car when they are assessing it in terms of the 'eligibility of the potential bachelor driver' (in other words they asked some very superficial women hanging out in Omotesando what aspect of the car they look at first when deciding who to fuck).

The NUMBER ONE thing that these ladies assessed the car and driver on was the NUMBERPLATE. If you don't have a Shinagawa or similar central Tokyo plate, they aren't interested. You could be driving a Ferrari around Omotesando for days but if you have a Saitama plate, you aint getting laid.

So basically if you don't have an address in central Tokyo to register the number plate to, you are wasting your money if you are hoping to use your car to get laid.

also convertibles are not popular in Japan for the same reason al-fresco drinks and dining are not. The convertible will also not help you get laid.

My advice: say the SLC is 4 million yen. Ditch that idea, buy an old but 'fun' sports car for 1 million and don't give a fuck about what anyone thinks. with the other 3 million yen you can go to a high end soap every couple weeks for a couple of years. Those girls will fuck the slight douchiness out of you and you'll probably meet a nice girl that likes you for you and live happily ever after with a car you enjoy driving and many nice soapland memories.

also please write reviews.

Words of wisdom. I also think that sports cars are a pain in Tokyo or any decent size city in Japan. Face it, you spend most of your time in stop and go traffic. Stick shift is a pain in the ass. As is a stiff clutch. The low sitting position makes it hard to park and maneuver in tight, slow moving traffic. Not a good idea unless you live in the countryside. If you insist on a sports car, I would go with a rally type like the WRX. Cheap, fun and practical.

I thought this whole "girls will sleep with me because of the car I drive" was just High School kid mentality. Adults really think that?!?!?

It's a car, not a penis.

Location Location Location

Don't forget parking.... in central Tokyo plan about 50,000JPY/month to park the fucking thing... You want to be flashy with a car then just rent one... see how it goes before plunking down loads of cash and all of the other associated costs. There are supercar rentals in Japan so people can rent them for whatever reason they have... Motorbike is much better idea IMO, cuz girls love something big and vibrating between their legs... Costs are lower, parking cheaper, maintenance lower cost.. just keep extra helmet around for the girl...

I also agree with @Lukes said... I've had BMW and Mercedes.... taking them for maintenance will cost you a fortune.. ie: E320 brake job for front $1,000.... I did it for $250 + one hour of time.
The BMW was a more enjoyable drive IMO the E320 was more smooth ride... FWIIW

I don’t recommend a convertible in Tokyo. There is a very short window of time when it would be comfortable to drive with the top down. Either too hot, too rainy, or too cold.

All Japanese people do though.
I was also surprised that in my country, Toyota seems the most popular car, but in Tokyo, imported cars seem the most popular and a real status symbol.

Personally i like the first car better, and my bet is that Japanese girls also prefer slick and new and a little more compact over a grand dad car.
Plus if you like it best yourself, you should do what makes you happy. Girls like a confident and happy vibe rather than someone who's just posing and trying to impress.

Got da big black Benz
Didnt impress anyone with it
Paid a lot in parking, insurance, shaken, taxes...
Now I’m a happy member of Times Car Share
And my SB thinks its the coolest, ecological thing to do :D

Yes, exactly. In the past year I've spent the equivalent of more than a few overnight escort dates on car expenses (more than 1000 big macs). And I don't even drive da 'big black benze', but rather a 'cute little thing'. For someone my age, the insurance fees are just plain extortion.:vomit: only drive 50km/week, so I'm considering getting rid of it too (secretly I hope to crash and get insurance payout).

If you want a vehicle that will get you laid, get something comfortable with a nice sound system and good environmental controls. And hey, a roomy back seat is a plus.

Most women don't care about any other feature of a vehicle. The ones that do generally only date motorheads in the first place.

I’d say neither but the SLC is a girls car. It’s not going to impress any Japanese women. The S class however may. IMHO Japanese women really aren’t that impressed with fancy cars.

Unfortunately I can confirm this by experience. The cars don't cost that much in Japan so you might be fooled, but owning a German luxury car is pretty similar to driving a convertible top down in a highway with an open bag full of 10.000 yen bills in the back seat.

Yanase is the only car shop in Japan where they shake your hand. Later you notice you are missing a finger or two and still that handshake cost you 40.000 yens. And I am pretty sure the plastic cup of coffee you drank while waiting for the paperwork was 20.000 yens. They actually once replaced the interior light bulb (120 yens in Yellow Hat) for me without even asking first and charged 8.000 yens for it. Well, it does take almost a full minute to do it though.

And with the new cars being able to maintain them is just not something that can be done. The highly trained mechanics they have there are basically just changing computer boards inside your engine block until the error messages in the main computer go away.

The SLC may look nice, but the S-class will do a better job clearing the right lane on the highway for you. ;)

One additional point to take into account - I don't know where you're coming from but chances are high that roads are going to be way, way more narrow than what you're used to.
Unless you're good at getting around tight, winding roads and have a very good feel of exactly how much maneuvering space you have there's a really good chance you're going to scratch up your side mirrors, etc a couple times. I know I did when I first started driving here.

Also taking insurance/registration/etc into account I'd probably go with something on the cheaper side as a starter and then work my way up after I was a bit more acclimated.

Also, as other posters have noted depending on where you live get ready to pay out the nose for a parking space - and it needs to be within 2km of your registered address so you can't just rent something cheap further out of town.

really good chance you're going to scratch up your side mirrors, etc a couple times.

Or someone with a rusty Honda drives in the middle of that narrow road so that both of your mirrors decide to part from the respective cars. And that she later when cops arrive claims she was as much in her side of the road as possible.

And the cops tell you she uses phrases that make them believe she has done this before and now it is just your word against her so they recommend you both pay your own damages. Her being like 5.000 yens as the car is probably not worth much more and Yanase taking your remaining kidney and 130.000 yens.

Not that anything like that would have ever happened to me, of course.

Should we mention that nice cars only attract teenage boys attention?

Get a car you like and enjoy driving. Don’t worry about what others think. If it’s practical, ask about reliability.
