That's one of the paid services - they do have to fund the site somehow.
I've used OK Cupid, the free version throughout 2018 and still use it. It is legitimate. Though the repsonse level is low from women, I have met around 8 non-escort/non-payment (what I mean is that I met them over coffee, not as a paid date) women from Ok Cupid (one was a catfish and another bait-and-switch) but the rest 6 were as their profile says. Only two out of the 8 - I was able to move onto love hotels with. Most, imo, are looking for long term relationships and are heavily invested in the "dating" phase, as opposed to 1 or 2 dates before sex.
Well, in my case my filtering ("Women who are interested in men ages 19-65 located within 50 kilometers of Tokyo online within the last month") returns only 40 profiles, and 95% of them being ugly.
That's another 38 people you can put through your "Looking for Love Inside a Smartphone" Program. Groundhog Day!

I created a totally fake profile once just for testing ok OKCupid with a photo of some random guy model.
It gave totally different results in the ladies available.
I didn’t catfish anyone or respond to any of the messages. I was really curious to see if they limit the profiles a guy can see & they do.

I'm definitely not a model and I am a bit on the chubby side and I get hundreds of options. It could just be something weird through the mobile app as it does have it's issues. Using the website tends to work a lot better than the mobile app.

Are you using filters? A lot of Japanese there will use average for body or little curvy.
OKcupid is legit. I get 50 matches a day. My profile is written in Japanese and have 3 pics. My opening message is japanese aswell. Always get a reply back (sometimes it takes 2 to 3 days)
Problem is many trans, and non-japanese (I don't date filipinas) women who have kids but don't mention it on their profile, overweight western women etc.
Women get 50 mails a day. Try be more creative with your mails. Hi or Hello how are you? You are cute! is boring and when a woman get 50 mails like these ofc they not gonna reply. You have to throw a leg. Give them a reason to reply.

I don't filter physical appearance.
My filter is pretty basic :
- no smoker
- speaks Japanese
When I removed "speaks japanese" I got about the same amount of results.
I have much better results with Coffee Meets Bagel and Japan Cupid

This is my online dating strategy. It works for OKcupid, Tinder and any japanese apps. I get around 50 matches a day and 10 mails a day (the women write me first)
1. Write your profile in Japanese. Once you're done send the profile text to a Japanese friend (female) and ask her to correct it and make it so it's more pleasant to read. Most western guys use business japanese and use punctuation wrong (too formal) It's awkward to read.
2. Have 3 pictures. 1st pic is pic of your face. Close up. 2nd picture is you standing with a friend in a social setting. Preferably a guy. Some women get insecure when they see you pose with another girl or they think you're a playboy. Picture with japanese coworkers would be perfect. Just hide their faces.
3. Something cute. Add a pic of a Shiba inu, A russian blue cat. Whatever. It's a great conversation opener. Of the 10 mails a day I get 5 of them are woman saying they love my cat or ask if the cat is mine. I don't have pets. I tell them it's mine and then they add me to LINE. When meet up and they ask about pet just tell them your pet is at a friends place cause you are so busy to take care of it because you are always working.
Basically fake it till you make it. You want to appear nice and pleasant while trying hard to not give off any playboy vibes.

Where are you from? Maybe it filters girls that are looking for a different nationality? I think that may also have some effect.
You can easily beat that algorithm. If I remember correctly you only required to answer 3 questions. Pick the 3 question and answer it like 99% of women do.
Q: Would you date someone who was in considerable debt?
A: No
Q: Could you date someone who was really messy?
A: No
Q: Which would you rather be? Normal of Weird?
A: Normal
Just answer everything socially desirable.
This got me thinking maybe that's why OP doesn't get matches. He answered everything truthful lol
If you say you're messy, weird and love discussing politics ofc you get less matches.
That's basically all the answers I gave.
Or maybe I'm too picky?
