On a random drunken Friday night about 15 years ago, after missing the last train and watching all of my friends decide to walk or cab it home because they, unlike me, had to work on Saturday, I found myself lurking through the 1am streets in Umeda, Osaka. My usual recourse has always been to reply, in English, "Sorry, I don't speak Japanese," at which point most of them will conclude that I'm some sort of bizarre "other" Asian and recoil in disgust. It still works to this day.
On that night, however, a particularly curious tout who was working alone delivered his usual sales pitch, I delivered my usual English reply, but then he gave a curious look and asked, in a decent attempt at English, "Where are you from?" I replied that I was an American, specifically a Japanese American, which for whatever reason piqued his interest and he began walking with me. I figured he was just being a little too committed to his job so I told him, in English and in Japanese, that I was absolutely not going to his club because those establishments are a waste of money and gaijin generally won't pay 30k for three drinks while some skank with fucked up teeth sits on my lap and tells me how handsome I am...and that all I wanted was a couple of nightcap drinks so I was going to find a proper bar, most likely a gaijin bar.

touts who are from the shops and just touting outside is still ok, especially you know they are from the shops or you have the intention to try the shop, like yoshiwara , which i would said is safe.
I normally will avoid those quiet street, hidden ,not open area especially those located upstairs cause once went upstairs alone, what ever happen can't really get help till you settle before you can come down.(especially notorious place where no police will bother).
Heard story from my client that he and his group of friends(18-22 ages) were beaten up in a night club in a quiet province, force to draw money from ATM before they were release.
Happened 25+ years ago, but don't know how true is it.
