I want to share my experience.
Some enquirers send me messages in Japanese but I am sure they are using google translator and it is most likely to be very shit Japanese.
Some of them have limited Japanese but they still try to speak to me Japanese. They make me annoyed. Why don't they send me just in English? Ate they testing that I understand Japanese?
Some clients say "why do you speak English? Are you 100% Japanese? No Japanese speak English". ............ well I want to ask you "don't you know some Japanese speak English? "
If client say Japanese is better to communicate, I speak Japanese. But 2 men did not believe I am Japanese. They speak very fluent Japanese (like Japanese native speaker). They said I am very good at Japanese and kept asking me what's my nationality. I had to lie and say I am Korean because I wanted them to just leave my apartment.
Interestingly, many Chinese think my Japanese is not good. I said to them if you think my Japanese is not good, your Japanese is not good enough.
I asked why they think my Japanese is not good. They all said because I use polite Japanese. When they waer at Japanese school, they learn polite word first and then casual word. But I have to say that they don't know about Japanese culture. It's very very common to use polite word when we see clients or especially if we meet someone first time.
So if your English is better than your Japanese, please use English and vice versa.
Anyway I found my own solution. I speak English even though my clients speak in Japanese.
Thanks for sharing your aweful experience with me here. I find it annoying, as well like "testing", like hiyakashi or something. I agree. I'm sorry to hear, you even had to face some uncomfortable situation. That sound so rude! Someone contacted me recently in Japanese, and I replied in English, ghosted afterwards. lol.
In short, for those that English is very, very limited, we speak and email in Japanese, but most cases for TAG clients, we expect to send emails in English, speak English.
