Ueno Naka-machi is an old and infamous red light area accessible from Ueno or Okachimachi stations. The best map I could find was this one of the Hub - the Hub furthest left on the map, actually on 仲町 just after the entrance. The main road running parallel to the north is called Shinobazu, also the name of that Hub branch. Nakamachi has a big curved overhead sign with the kanji written on it so you cant miss it. Follow the groups of salarymen.

Easiest way to find it is follow signs to Ueno Keisei Line station and carry str8 on. Or get off at JR Okachimachi and proceed to Don Quixote duscount store on ur right, crossing the road n hanging a left down a narrow side street. That will take you near the far end of the main drag.
The main drag is full of cheapish chow joints and hostess bars. What's interesting is that most of the hostess bars are Chinese and you will see the girls on the street trying to attract customers. It is possible but unlikely they will stop a westerner though. As you get further down the street you will find Thai hostess bars, there are about 4 now, as well as Philippina bars. The system is pretty much the same everywhere, 4000 yen plus 10% tax (4400 total) for one hour of conversation. That price includes shochu and whiskey but not beer. These girls like to get your mail address so they can send you (and all their other customers) messages to come along on the nites they are working there, they get commission on shimei and drinx. When the hour is up, a waiter will come along and ask you if you want to extend and at this point it is best to bail bcoz the extension hourly r8 is often 1000 yen or more higher than ur 1st hour.
Hostess bars are much the same all over the world. Waste of money if you are looking for something more than a conversation. Having said that, given a choice between hanging with a buncha middle-aged miserable barstewards in a british theme pub or spending a pleasant couple of hours in a hostess bar talking to sexy young girls with their oppai bursting outta their lounge dresses, its a non-brainer for me. These girls like to make a guy feel special so that you spend loads of dosh on her. The bars love it when guys get infatu8d with a particular girl and keep going back. I feel sorry for some of the J-guyz I see in these joints who don't always look like they can afford it.
Can you meet a girl when she finishes work or when she is not working, I can hear people asking. Depends on the girl I guess. That's y the J-guys keep going back. The non-Chinese foreign girls are all legal residents, either married or divorced to Japanese or with family visas bcoz of having a relative married to one. Most have daytime jobs as well as the evening gigs so are raking it in and dont need to do extramurals. The Chinese girls are often uni or Japanese language students. I think Taiwanese can come over on working holiday visas now, same for Koreans. If you happen to hit on a foreign girl who just got divorced from a J-guy, ur chances are considerable higher.
Enuf then about the hostess bars. As you proceed down the main drag you will see lanes leading off to your left with pink salons or "image" salons in the distance. Pretty much all are gaijin friendly but after trying 3 of them, my advice is STAY AWAY!!! You may pay about 6000 or more and regret it. Scams abound (aggressive woman asking for more money once you are inside and threatening to run off with your shoes if you don't pay them) and/or 50 year old fugly hags wearing school girl uniforms. The stuff nitemares are made of. No point mentioning names of bars as if I could remember n e way, but these shite joints are always changing name and reopening with the same staff as something new. No way can any of them possibly get repeat customers.
By the time you get towards the end of the main drag you should have been approached by Chinese male or female touts offering "sex" or the Japanese word "honban 本番" for 10,000 yen for a 30 minutes session.
Until 2 years ago, you'd be taken to what looked like a normal hostess bar but was a knocking shop and all the girls would line up and you could choose one and they were all young, sexy and pretty Chinese or Taiwanese. Then the joint got busted and now the system and venue has changed. What will happen is that the tout will lead you into an empty room in a building and show you a foto album. Girls all early 20s and very attractive (in the fotos). So you choose a girl and pay the dude 10,000 in advance, who will suggest you pay more for a longer session which you will refuse.
You will then be led nearby into an empty apartment block where a shutter will be pulled up and you will find yourself in a room with about 6 curtained off massage beds. A girl will appear who will be in her 30s and not look anything like the one in the foto. So you complain and will be shown another girl, who may not be any better. Dont bother asking for your money back. You could I guess try and take a foto of the foto of the girl b4 you go to the knocking shop but you will already have parted company with 10,000 by the time you get there.
They make you take a shower first, but give you a plastic container to put your valuables in which you can bring into the shower. Service will be a domed BJ then the girl will climb on top of you. She won't let you kiss her but you should be able to suck on a tit. As soon as you have shot ur load u will take another shower and be out. This is what most of us would call shite service. To make matters worse, when you are about to get down to business on the one girl, another girl may appear uninvited and suggest a threesome. Get rid of her.
Is it worth 10,000 yen? Up to you. I have done it 2ce but never again unless I can see the girl first in personal.
