The Anything Goes Thread

I'm sure someone can find a deranged Dutchman with qualifications as an arsonist.
Oh don’t worry, we have plenty of those guys in my little country. They often wear yellow jackets. Happy to export them to the UK while the tunnel is still open.

Govt building and All Religious building should get torched every so often just to keep them in line imho

Burnt synagogue would have attracted the same answer? :D
Translating my previous comment from Southern American to plain American, "bless your heart" is how polite Southern ladies say "fuck you". I bear no demands of faith on anyone but have no patience for the followers of Dawkins.

Aaaaaah okaaaaay.
Apologies for not mastering Southern-American (polite ladies version... well all versions really, apart from a bit of cajun)

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't have any ill will toward religion. Every group of people has good, kind people as well as assholes.
I just think that fairy tales should just that and nothing more............there's assholes in fairy tales we all know..........

I would say “politicians”, but I realized that you were referring to people.

Just because I don't personally believe what they believe, it doesn't mean it's a fairy tale though. There's space in the world for different beliefs, no?
It'd be a much happier place this planet we call Earth if it was never invented in the first place I feel.
Man's worst invention......

I understand where you're coming from, but it also seems to motivate them to do good too. I know religious people are statistically more generous and charitable, beyond giving to their own specific organisations. It's definitely caused devastation as well, that's all too evident throughout history, and it continues today in many places.
But just on an individual level, some of the closest people to me are religious, and they are the kindest people I know. They tell me it's because of their faith, and I believe them, even if I don't believe what they believe if that makes any sense. So I generally don't judge people on their religion. For most people it's culture or background or upbringing anyway, not really something they're trying to get me to subscribe to.

I believe they are just generally very nice people, and just happen to be religious. And even if they believe they are nice because of their religion: well, they already have shown they believe things that cannot be proven so there... :D

But do you really believe they would immediately turn to complete assholes if they lost their faith? Didn't think so either.

Of course they wouldn't turn into assholes, even long term. That's not the point though. They say religion being part of their upbringing is what taught them morals and built their character, and there's no reason not to believe that's true. Some kids learn bravery and sacrifice through reading about their favourite heroes in comic books. Doesn't mean comic books are real. But the effect they had on shaping a child? Sure. I don't believe in religion, but I can't say it's completely without value, seeing the way it helps some people.

If their parents, being decent people, didn't have religion they would have find other good ways to teach them morals. Like giving them comic books. People who need a vengeful god watching over their heads the whole time in order to be decent are not very good people to begin with.

Of course religions are not completely without value; there are reasons why man created them in the first place. The biggest reason is probably that when you community grows big enough the connections between the members cannot be so strong anymore so you need a way to keep the assholes in check. Academics have nicer ways to say this but basically that's what they are saying.

Yeah I don't disagree with you. Just saying it does have a good effect on SOME people. Bad effect on others. My whole point was, I try not to be too judgemental about people's beliefs, especially if they're good folks.

My experience is good folks don't try to push their religion in your throat or use it (and your lack of religion) to make you feel bad about yourself.

The good folks are just happy they believe in something and let others be. I have no problem with religious people like that either.

100% agreed. It makes it easier to respect someone's beliefs if they are willing to respect yours.

That gives a different perspective to grandma’s cookies :D I was expecting the horniness to stop after menopause so I could spend my life doing more productive things tho.. And, um.. maybe not think about sex for a day or two -_-

Well, to be fair, sex after menopause does tend to be less productive. Or reproductive.:p

Okay, sorry, I'll show myself out.
