Best ramen

That's not ramen. That is beansprouts flavored with ramen broth. Ramen is a soup, if there's too many non soup items on it to make it not a soup then it is no longer ramen.

Hence, my earlier statement that Jiro-style ramen is hardly real ramen.

Okay, here's a prime example about why Jiro-style ramen is both fantastic and outrageous. I personally think it barely qualifies as ramen due to the amount of toppings that go on the noodles, but that's just my personal preference.

In this vid, this large eater takes his wife and kid to a Jiro-style ramen shop (not an official Jiro shop) and orders the most toppings of pig fat, veggies, etc. that he can get. You can't honestly tell me that promoting gluttony like that is good for anything. I feel for his poor son. He ain't gonna stay thin for very long.

The main event starts at 2:00.

Well, i think that adding veggies doesn't add much calories, and does make a white noodle based meal a lot healthier...

Definitely, the bean sprouts have zero calories, so very healthy. The problem is, that isn't the only topping you get when you order a gigantic portion like that. What also gets ordered is アブラ (pork fat), カラメ (a mix of soy sauce and other seasonings), etc. If it was just the bean sprouts, it would be okay, but the other toppings will give you calorie and sodium overload.

A "small" ramen from ramen Jiro is the standard size, but even that is 1400 calories. What this guy in the video is eating is easily at least 3000 calories.

Are you referring to a porky cheese smell? That's the best!!!!! I absolutely love when a ramen shop has that! You know what they say, the stinkier, the tastier. (Except for DATY, if you ask me)

I have to agree with the DATY comment. I got a good laugh out of that.

If you want to try something a little different there is a roast beef ramen place in Kabukicho. It looks like there are shops in Ikebukuro and Gotanda also.

Not really a soup, but a sauce. Maybe more like a pasta but the noodles are definitely ramen.

What you are referring to is Abura Soba (Oil Noodles) or Maze Soba (Mixed Noodles). They're a variant of ramen but with no soup, just tare (sauce) and a shit load of yummy toppings. You basically eat the noodles by mixing them with the toppings to get the best consistency. The emphasis on this type of style is to have less liquid to swallow and more umami components.

I have tried that roast beef place. I had my noodles with cream cheese. It's good, but just a tad bit expensive for my tastes.

I really recommend spicy Taiwan Maze Soba, which has sort of been catching on for the past year. The best place I can recommend is near Higashi Shinjuku and it's called Hanabi.

The spicy meat topping will burn your mouth and give you the shits the next morning, but it's 100% worth it.

If you ever wanted to know what ramen shop has the thickest and richest soup, it's probably this place in Aichi Prefecture. It seems a tad thicker than Muteppo, if you can believe it.

The master is a complete character that'll get most ramen heads giggling.
I just might make a stop by this place on my next drive to the area.

They do veggie and soup without noodles (men nashi/men nuki) actually. “Men-nashi ramen” is a contradiction in terms but seems to be getting popular.

Do they still ask you for toppings, in that case?
If yes, my call would probably be:

Yasai-mashi mashi (extra extra extra vegetables)
Abura (pork fat)
Ninniku-mashi (extra garlic)

For me, It's not the spicy meat toppings which upset my digestive system, but the noodles themselves. Which is why I was interested in places with a rice noodles option.
Sometimes the pain absolutely worth it though. Also a good excuse to take 30 min shits at work.

anyone got recommendations for spicy ramen in tokyo

or has anyone tried this place?

That place in Kanda has been visited by a ton of youtubers because it's crazy spicy.
I think it goes way overboard, but if that's your thing and you like shitting on the toilet all day, be my guest.

For mildly spicy ramen, I can recommend Hanabi in Higashi-Shinjuku.
It's Taiwan mazesoba (mixed noodles) which is not technically ramen, but it is absolutely delicious.

The spicy meat topping is what makes the dish, and you can also order Taiwan ramen at this place which is more
of the same thing in soup version.

I'd say one of the more famous ones isis Kikan 鬼金棒, aka karashibi ramen カラシビラーメン . The Kara refers to the red pepper spiciness, and the shibi referr to the Szechuan pepper that numbs / tingles you tongue. You can choose the level of spiciness for both.
In Ikebukuro and Kanda

If you're looking for stupid spicy, there's one called denim ramen or something like that. I'd have to look it up when at a PC for you.
